For the first time a US Catholic bishop faces criminal charges over child abuse

After 25 years of revelations about bishops who knowingly moved abusive priests to out-of-the-way places, one of these “priest-shufflers” has finally been charged with committing this crime. Bishop Finn of Kansas City, Missouri is a favourite of the Pope, even pushing the Latin mass, and he’s also a member of Opus Dei. Only three years ago the bishop settled lawsuits with 47 abused young people in his diocese and promised to report any future cases to the police immediately. Yet, though his diocese was informed back in 2006 that yet another priest was suspected of sexually abusing little girls, nothing was done. Instead, the bishop sent the priest to a parish where he attended children’s birthday parties and spent weekends in the homes of parish families. The parishioners feel betrayed. They’ve even put up a Facebook page called “Bishop Finn must go”.
Another favourite of the Pope is the Bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria. In 2004 Bishop Müller sent a known paedophile priest to an unsuspecting village where he abused an 11-year-old boy. This outraged his parishioners so much that they took to demonstrating against him in front of the cathedral. Of course, having parishioners hate the bishop is nothing new in the history of the Church ? but this time round the Vatican can no longer control the situation through an Inquisition. Slovakia has recently been faced with a very difficult choice. No one wants to bail out Greece, which only got into the euro zone by lying about its finances. However, now it has to be supported, or everyone else will suffer, too. Slovakia has shown that it’s willing to make sacrifices for the European Union. Your country has earned the respect of the rest of Europe as a full member and not just a euro-opportunist. This kind of commitment to Europe should lead to increasing democracy in Slovakia. I suspect that what you have been fighting for is soon going to come about. Church control over society can collapse fast when a taboo is broken. When Slovaks come forward to tell their stories of abuse by priests, Slovakia will join the rest of Europe in its revulsion against the Vatican’s criminal conspiracy against Catholic children.
Bishop in Missouri Waited Months to Report Priest, Stirring Parishioners’ Rage The allegations that a priest took indecent photographs of young girls are recent, and his bishop has acknowledged knowing about them for months before informing the police.
